Implants
Missing teeth cause many problems. An imperfect smile is the most common, especially when the tooth missing is located in the front of the mouth, but the gaps left also affect speaking and chewing. There are several options for replacing missing teeth, but one of the most popular methods is becoming dental implants.
A dental implant is the healthiest option available, due to the function of the implant itself. The implant replaces the entire tooth and root, not just the tooth above the gum line.
An implant consists of three components. A titanium screw is placed into the jawbone during a minor office procedure. An abutment piece is placed on top of the screw, and a crown is attached. The crown placed on the day of the procedure is temporary. The permanent crown will be placed after healing is complete, approximately three to six months.
The implant is the healthiest option because it replaces the root of the missing tooth. By replacing the root, the normal vibrations from chewing are still transmitted into the jawbone, which keeps the bone volume from declining.
